Protecting Yourself from Cyber Criminals and Fraudsters

Safeguard your Accounts from Cyber Crime

Computer-related crimes affecting businesses and individuals are frequently in the news. While Benchmark Bank is vigilant regarding information security by constantly updating our policies and procedures to protect our customers, consumers also need to take steps that will help safeguard your computers and your money.

Some simple first steps for online protection:

  • Protect your computer by installing anti-virus software.
  • Use strong passwords, vary them for different accounts, and change them frequently.
  • Be careful where you connect to the internet for banking or other communications that involve sensitive personal information.
  • Small businesses should implement cyber fraud policies and procedures, as well as training, for their employees.
  • Be careful when using Smartphones or Tablets - do not leave them unattended and install a security feature to restrict access in case they are lost or stolen.
  • Be suspicious if someone online unexpectedly asks for personal information.
  • Do not respond to, or click attachments, in unsolicited emails. A common fraud scheme is that the email appears to come from someone you know or an executive in a financial institution where you have accounts.
  • Use caution when on social networking sites as cyber-criminals gather information about you. The names of your children or pet, where you live, birth date, or mother's maiden name all often appear on an individual's social media site and can be used to re-set or figure out your passwords.
  • Utilize internet safety features such as secure sites (https://) and always log out of financial accounts when you leave your computer.
  • Pay close attention to your bank accounts and watch for unauthorized payments or withdrawals. Contact your Personal Banker immediately should you notice any unusual activity.
